Heart Transplants

Often we see advertisements in television and newspapers stating/asking us to donate organs for people who are in desperate need. Though the organs would be of no use to us after death, people still hesitate to donate. This is a small explanation of the donation procedure. It may inspire and ease people to donate. A heart transplant is surgery to remove a person’s diseased heart and replace it with a healthy heart from a deceased donor. The operation is harvesting the heart from the donor. The donor is an unfortunate person who has suffered irreversible brain injury, called “brain death”. A team of physicians, nurses, and technicians go to the hospital of the donor to remove donated organs once brain death of the donor has been determined. The removed organs are transported on ice to keep them alive until they can be implanted. For the heart, this is optimally less than six hours. So, the organs are often flown by airplane or helicopter to the recipient’s hospital with full police protection. Heart transplants though now a easy process is not common because the awareness is less. Another reason is that all the insurers don’t pay for heart transplant. Donors are very less. When life is going to end some day, why don’t people give their organs after their death?? In fact by donating organs, people live through someone else!! So it is humbly requested that people should come forward and start donating organs. Start registering with your nearby hospital and live after death.
